‘Labour gets two-thirds more homes built for Southampton than the Tories’ Shadow Housing Secretary hails Southampton for tackling the housing crisis with bricks and mortar

Analysis of Whitehall figures show that on average a Labour run Southampton builds two-thirds more homes than when the Conservatives are in charge of the council.

When the Tories were in control the average number built per year was 410 per year. 4,110 homes have been built since 2012 under Labour, an average of 685 homes per year – a 67% increase.

These figures show how crucial it is that Labour keep control of Southampton council on 2 May.

Cutting the ribbon today on new affordable homes at Townhill Park the Shadow Housing Secretary John Healey MP said:

“Local people need the good low-cost homes that Labour-led Southampton council is getting built. This is a stand-out council with even bigger housing plans after the May elections. It shows that Labour builds more homes but also builds better, offering low-cost and high quality.

“The country has a housing crisis, and in this city everyone knows someone who can’t get the home they need or aspire to. Britain now needs a bold housing plan to fix the crisis which is why the next Labour government will work with Southampton to build a million genuinely affordable homes and kick start the biggest council house building programme in more than 30 years”

Southampton Council is planning to build 665 new homes in Townhill Park as part of the entire estate regeneration (225+ net homes).

The Shadow Housing Secretary visited Townhill Park on Thursday to welcome local families to six newly built terraced houses and to view the 50 new near completed flats which will have local families in them in the next couple of months.
Simon Letts (PPC for Southampton Itchen)

“It’s great to see Southampton’s Labour Council building council homes again but they could do so much more if they were backed by a Labour government. A Labour government will fix the housing crisis and build the affordable homes that families need.”

Councillor Kaur (Cabinet Member for Homes, Southampton)

“This is the first of hundreds more homes that the Council will build across Southampton. There’s never been a greater demand for more affordable housing in our city and the regeneration of Townhill Park shows our commitment to providing much needed high-quality and affordable houses that local families can call their home.”
