Listen to the Lords on Adult Care says Lorna Fielker

Southampton’s Cabinet Member for Adult Care, Lorna Fielker has called on the
Health and Social Care Secretary Caroline Dineage to take heed of a cross-party
House of Lords Report on Adult Social Care.
The report says that the government should stop “faffing around” and properly fund a
system that is riddled with unfairness and leaves people enduring real suffering after
a decade of austerity.
Speaking on behalf of the Southampton City Council Labour Group Mrs Fielker said
that it is fundamentally wrong that in order to fund care many older people are facing
costs that can run into hundreds of thousands of pounds and wipe out a lifetime of
savings.
She has written to the City’s MP’s to ask them to press the views of the Lords’
committee on to the Health and Social Care Secretary when she visits Southampton
this week.
Mrs Fielker went on to say,” In Southampton we’ve formed the Making Social Care
Work Board to promote efficiency and represent all interests. However, if there is no
change in funding the future for social care and all such services delivered by local
authorities are unsustainable.”
