Itchen MP Welcomes Primary Schools Investment

Southampton Itchen Labour MP John Denham has welcomed the Government’s confirmation that Southampton’s primary schools are to take part in the Primary Capital Programme beyond this year.

Schools Minister Jim Knight has written to John Denham to tell him that his Department has now fully approved revised plans submitted by Southampton LA for local delivery of the Primary Capital Programme.

John Denham said “This is excellent news.  The Primary Capital Programme commits to renewing at least half of all primary school buildings by 2022-23; creating primary schools that are equipped for 21st century learning, at the heart of their communities, with children’s services in reach of every family.

As a start, £1.75 billion of new capital investment became available nationally from last month. This represents a major injection of new capital investment that will not only benefit children and families but will also provide a welcome boost for the construction industry and local businesses who will be crucial to delivering the new and refurbished primary schools.”

To access funding, local authorities were required to prepare and agree with the Department a Primary Strategy for Change.  The strategy submitted by Southampton LA was initially approved subject to modification.  On this basis, the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) confirmed indicative funding for 2009-10 but made clear that future funding would be dependent upon the Department receiving confirmation that the issues identified have been addressed.

The modified Strategy has now been approved and the DCSF has confirmed indicative funding for 2010-11.
