“I am delighted to have been chosen by the Labour Party to stand as a candidate in Southampton: the city I have called home since 1981. As Leader of the council for the last four years, I have worked tirelessly to improve our city despite the cuts imposed by the Tory government.
Under my leadership your Labour Council has helped bring over 8000 jobs to the city and ensured local people get a good chance of getting them. We also have exciting plans to design and build the next generation of council homes for rent, employing Southampton workers. In addition we have kept open all our Sure Start centres and Libraries, unlike nearby Tory councils, and have invested heavily in the city's roads - with forty more major resurfacing jobs promised for next year.
We have also worked closely with the NHS to develop new solutions to Social care, opening our first ‘Extra Care’ housing earlier this year, with further schemes to follow.”
